The Tasplan International Women’s Day Awards for Excellence 2021 are designed to recognise and give visibility to outstanding contributions by women in the Tasmanian State Service, the community services industry and local government.
This year, the event is going virtual! This will enable those from around Tasmania to attend the event from home, their office or join with colleagues in a meeting room at work.

Join us to hear from keynote speaker Grace Tame, an inspirational Tasmanian advocate for survivors of sexual assault who was recently awarded 2021 Australian of the Year, along with sector leaders.
International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women — while also marking a call to action for accelerating gender balance. The theme for International Women’s Day in 2021 is #ChooseToChallenge. A challenged world is an alert world. Individually, we are all responsible for our own thoughts and actions — all day, every day.

MEMBER PROFILE - MURRAY JAMIESON
This month we have interviewed Murray Jamieson, Manager Digital Innovation and GIS from Waratah-Wynyard Council.
What do you do in your role and how long have you been doing it?
I have been in Local Government for 16 years and with Waratah-Wynyard Council for the last 12 in various technical roles. My current Role, which I have been in for 2 years sees me managing all of Councils IT & GIS needs.
What made you want to work in Local Government?
Starting in IT sales while studying engineering and IT I then moved to Local Government about 16 years ago. The move was one of convenience originally with the opportunity arising for my first Local Government role with Livingstone Shire Council in Queensland. This is where I fell into GIS and a found a passion and a worthy career. 16 years later I am still here and still passionate about GIS and the role Local government plays in the Community.
What made you join LG Professionals Tasmania?
My membership was sponsored by my workplace, since becoming a member it has been a great way to network and see all the great work that is being done around Tasmania in the Local Government sector. I am passionate about GIS and its beneficial function in Local Government, and I am keen to contribute and mentor where I can.
What interests do you have outside of work?
Family & Faith, Vegie Gardening, Bushwalking, Unashamed Trekkie
If you could give your 12-year-old self 1 piece of advice what would it be?
Be true to yourself, trust your instincts, It is never wrong to do the right thing and be strong against peer pressure and NEVER GIVE UP!
What is something most people don’t know about you?
I am related to Sir William Wallace, One of Scotland’s National Heroes.
What do you think are some of the biggest challenges facing the sector at the moment?
Adapting systems and processes to cater for current and future demand from staff working from home, as well as reinforcing Business continuity from an IT perspective given the “New Normal” with COVID-19 and beyond.
Biggest regret outside of work in the past 10 years?
I always say draw from the past but do not let it draw from you, and thus I generally do not have any regrets. However I would have liked to get into cryptocurrency back when it was new.
