LG Professionals Tas in partnership with
Christine Turnbull, People on Purpose Group is launching a leadership program uniquely
tailored for middle managers, supervisors, team leaders and coordinators in
Tasmanian local government.
The program aims to equip middle managers

teams, communicate with impact and provide clear direction to build strong
foundations for a positive and healthy workplace culture.
This is achieved through a unique, blended
learning format consisting of a series of in-person group training workshops,
personal action plans and an individual coaching program over a period of six
months from February 2021.

brochure to find out more.

ATTEND THE 2020 LOCAL GOVERNMENT MEETING IN TASMANIA
|
|
|
Tasmanians can listen to 25 speakers, keynotes, and experts across local government and industry plus eight Australian Government Departments and federal agencies without having to get on a flight this year.
The national local government conference on 1-2 December - the 2020 Local Government Meeting - is a 2-day conference that’s been made more accessible than ever.
You can join the conference physically on Day 1 at our dedicated meeting point in Launceston, hosted by City of Launceston, so that you can still network with your peers in a COVID-safe way. Day 2 is then completely digital and online.
Can’t get to Launceston? That’s completely fine – you can sign up for a digital ticket and experience the full event online. You can still participate live and ask presenters and panellists questions during the conference from the comfort of your home or office.
This professional development opportunity will cover the renewed financial sustainability challenge, disaster mitigation and recovery, diversity in leadership, the future skills of local government professionals, and many more key issues for our sector after a tumultuous 2020. It’s really about building back better in 2021.
Take a look at the extensive speaker program for the full picture. During the evening session the Federation Award winners will be announced.
We invite you to attend the first day of the national conference in-person at the City of Launceston on Tuesday 1 December. Don't delay, register today as the conference is less than a fortnight away.

LGPro Victoria are offering placements for Tasmanian members and non-members to attend their forthcoming webinar Performance Coaching – Are you set up for success?
The session is designed for anyone who is expected to coach for performance – regardless of the models and techniques you might use or your role in the organisation.
Presented by leaders in the field, Gayle Hardie and Malcolm Lazenby of Global Leadership Foundation will provide strategies for the best mindset, impact and principles for conversations around performance.
The most successful performance coaching isn’t simply about the model or techniques you use. Whilst all models are valuable, they are only half the equation. The other (and often more important) critical success factor in performance coaching is you – your mindset, impact and the principles that guide you.

MEMBER PROFILE - DARYL CONNELLY
|
|
|
This month we have interviewed Daryl Connelly, the Chief Executive Officer of Cradle Coast Authority.
|
|
|
Daryl, what do you do in your role and how long have you been doing it?
CCA is owned by the nine Councils of western and north western Tasmania to help them achieve regional outcomes and maintain strong local government, by working together. We employ twenty one staff across three business functions – economic development, natural resource management and strategic services (i.e. shared and corporate services).
I directly manage the economic development part of the business, as well as having responsibility for the business as a whole. I was appointed as CEO two years ago and started at CCA six months before that.
|
|
|
What
made you want to work in Local Government?
I
have always been passionate about our corner of the island, and the important
role that strong local government has in balancing out the influence of Hobart
and Canberra and ensuring regional communities get a fair go.
What
made you join LG Professionals Tasmania?
Our
Member Councils have a twenty-year history of working well together, and all of
us at CCA are keen to take that to the next level. That requires empathy and
trust, and LG Pro is a great vehicle for bringing local government
professionals together. That’s why I joined, and that’s why we have partnered with
them on a number of initiatives.
What
interests do you have outside of work?
I
have always taken my work very seriously, and I invest even more of myself into
this role, as it is too important not to. One day I’d like to make more time
for sailing, travelling, and bushwalking. I need to get back into my pre-CEO
fitness routine!
If
you could give your 12-year-old self 1 piece of advice what would it be?
Start
saving and investing your money early.
What
is something most people don’t know about you?
I
left school at the end of year ten to work on a farm, and I am a chef by trade.
What
do you think are some of the biggest challenges facing the sector at the
moment?
CCA
and our Member Councils have recently done a really great piece of work
analysing the local government workforce in the region. It’s an aging
workforce, and we have to find new ways of attracting and retaining talent. Our
Australian School Based Apprentice (ASbA) project, which is seeing Member
Councils put on ASbAs, is one part of the solution.
Biggest
regret outside of work in the past 10 years?
While
there are plenty of things I could have done better or differently, I tend not
to waste time and focus on regret.

First-time
sponsor at the recent LG Professionals Conference, Red Piranha, is a
cutting-edge cybersecurity company that was created out of an identified need in
the market. Against a backdrop of the
increasing prevalence of cyberattacks, most solutions are passive,
unnecessarily expensive and typically provided by overseas-owned companies.
Red
Piranha is Australian owned and its equipment manufactured locally. Its range of offerings are actively managed,
predictive, quick to respond to attacks and are approachable in terms of
cost. In addition, compliance reports
can be automatically generated to meet management and insurance needs.
The
company has a number of customers in local government and various council
bodies in Victoria but is only now beginning to generate awareness of its
product and service offerings through its Tasmanian point of contact, Justin
Birchmore, who can be reached via justin@redpiranha.net.
