ANNUAL AWARDS - NOMINATE TODAY

The LG Professionals Australia National Federation Awards is an annual celebration of outstanding achievements in local government for individuals and councils.

The awards honour local governments for their efforts in making a difference in their communities, by showcasing innovative solutions that demonstrate leading practices, deliver quality services and better outcomes for communities, and have the potential to be replicated across the country.

Here in Tasmania, the Awards Program has been designed to support the national awards with the state winners being entered into the national competition.

The Tasmanian winners will be recognised at an awards ceremony in Launceston on Thursday 4 June.

TASMANIAN REGIONAL FINAL

The regional Management Challenge is taking place in Launceston on Wednesday 5 May.

Four teams are competing this year:

  • Kingborough Council
  • City of Launceston
  • Derwent Valley Council
  • Waratah Wynyard Council

The Management Challenge is a simulation-based team building, learning and networking program using real local government themes – the types of issues that a senior management team in a council would most likely face.

The teams are challenged to respond to a series of tasks in a unique one-day, fast paced “pressure cooker” environment. Some tasks will require written responses, such as a council report or recommendation document while some will take the form of role plays or presentations. The teams are scored on observations of how well they display energy, synergy, effectiveness and creative thinking.

The Management Challenge will be facilitated by Paul West.

The best performing team from Tasmania will go on to compete in the Australasian final which will be held in conjunction with the Local Government Professionals Australia National Congress in Canberra in August.

All the best to the Tasmanian teams on the Management Challenge Day!

MEMBER PROFILE - WENDY YOUNG

This month we have interviewed Wendy Young, Manager Community and Corporate Development, Southern Midlands Council.

Wendy, what do you do in your role and how long have you been doing it?

I was appointed to the role of Manager Community & Corporate Development in October 2020. Prior to this, I held the position of Corporate Compliance Officer for 2 1/2 years. Working in a small rural council you tend to wear multiple hats. Some of my duties include insurance, WHS, risk management, recreation facilities and buildings management, working with community groups, audits, events, policy reviews, mentoring junior officers and supporting the General Manager and Deputy General Manager.

What made you want to work in Local Government?

I've always had a keen interest in my local community. Working in local government has provided me with an opportunity to support, help identify and assist my local community with issues that they are passionate about and making it a better place.

What made you join LG Professionals Tasmania?

It provides an opportunity to network, make connections, share stories and learn from other member’s experiences, as well as offering my own experiences to support other members.

What interests do you have outside of work?

I enjoy spending time with friends and family.  I don't mind a good barbie and I am a bit partial to country music. I also enjoy watching my son play footy.

If you could give your 12-year-old self 1 piece of advice what would it be?

Be yourself and don’t worry about what other people think of you.  A favourite quote of mine, “You can’t force anyone to value, respect, understand, or support you, but you can choose to spend your time around people who do.” ~ Lori Deschene

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I completed my Bachelor of  Business in 2019, after studying part time for 7 years.

What do you think are some of the biggest challenges facing the sector at the moment?

Obviously COVID has been a huge challenge for our sector and will continue to be for some time, especially if we have another outbreak.  Being able to provide more for our community with less resources.

Biggest regret outside of work in the past 10 years?

I could say that I have no regrets but one of the challenges of being human is to allow ourselves to have regrets. It's all too easy to look back at a decision made and wished that different choices were made. But we all need to recognise that we did our best with the information we had at the time. Life brings many challenges, sometimes we make mistakes and hopefully learn from those mistakes and try to make better decisions in the future.
