What made you want to work in Local Government?
I was looking for a career change after running a small business that was frustratingly susceptible to market changes. I had friends that worked in Local Government at the time who convinced me of job security and stability that Local Government provided at a time when I was looking for just that. I soon came to the realisation that Local Government offered much, much more in terms of diversity and job satisfaction associated with the ability to affect positive community outcomes and participate in cross organisational projects within a complex environment.
What made you join LG Professionals Tasmania?
I have been a member of LGPro Victoria for much of my LG career and have benefited from participating in their development programs, enjoyed contributing as a member of the conference organising committee and of course attendance at the conferences. I am avid believer in the value that LGPro provides in the support and development of the professions within our sector.
What interests do you have outside of work?
I am married with three children aged ten and under which usually determines how my time is spent outside of work hours. Fortunately, we enjoy each other’s company and share interests in outdoor recreation, sports, food and events.
If you could give your 12-year-old self 1 piece of advice what would it be?
Embrace every opportunity, value every experience (good or bad) and don’t be a flog!
What is something most people don’t know about you?
My experience in LG has been predominately within the infrastructure space, however my first degree and early career was in the arts.
What do you think are some of the biggest challenges facing the sector at the moment?
Without appropriate intervention from all tiers of government population growth (and retention), social equity and economic diversification will drastically change the communities in which serve and live.
The perpetual speculation around amalgamations is unhelpful, however it provides continual opportunities for officers and elected members to demonstrate value to their communities.
The expectations of our communities will continue to increase, in the quantity, quality, range and timeliness of services we provide, however I think a big shift is underway in how LG’s contribute to greater social outcomes locally and broadly such as cultural reconciliation, climate action and driving state and federal policy.
Biggest regret outside of work in the past 10 years?
Not having the foresight to have invested in shares in one of tech unicorns!
