MEMBER PROFILE

Each newsletter we feature one of our current members. In this edition, we have interviewed Shane Power, GM of George Town Council who recently joined the LG Professionals Board.

Shane, what do you do in your role and how long have you been doing it?

I have been General Manager of George Town Council since 21 January 2019.

The General Manager has a number of legislated and delegated responsibilities including delivering council operations, budgets, annual and strategic plans.   None of which could be achieved without a great team of people investing their talent and time in achieving a shared vision.  As with all leadership positions, a significant part of the General Manager’s role is to bring the best out in their people through providing an empowering, supportive and rewarding culture in a safe and healthy environment. This can be one of the most resource intensive parts of my role, but is also the most satisfying.

What made you want to work in Local Government?

I was looking for a career change after running a small business that was frustratingly susceptible to market changes.   I had friends that worked in Local Government at the time who convinced me of job security and stability that Local Government provided at a time when I was looking for just that.  I soon came to the realisation that Local Government offered much, much more in terms of diversity and job satisfaction associated with the ability to affect positive community outcomes and participate in cross organisational projects within a complex environment.

What made you join LG Professionals Tasmania?

I have been a member of LGPro Victoria for much of my LG career and have benefited from participating in their development programs, enjoyed contributing as a member of the conference organising committee and of course attendance at the conferences.  I am avid believer in the value that LGPro provides in the support and development of the professions within our sector.

What interests do you have outside of work?

I am married with three children aged ten and under which usually determines how my time is spent outside of work hours.   Fortunately, we enjoy each other’s company and share interests in outdoor recreation, sports, food and events.

If you could give your 12-year-old self 1 piece of advice what would it be?

Embrace every opportunity, value every experience (good or bad) and don’t be a flog!

What is something most people don’t know about you?

My experience in LG has been predominately within the infrastructure space, however my first degree and early career was in the arts.

What do you think are some of the biggest challenges facing the sector at the moment?

Without appropriate intervention from all tiers of government population growth (and retention), social equity and economic diversification will drastically change the communities in which serve and live.

The perpetual speculation around amalgamations is unhelpful, however it provides continual opportunities for officers and elected members to demonstrate value to their communities.

The expectations of our communities will continue to increase, in the quantity, quality, range and timeliness of services we provide, however I think a big shift is underway in how LG’s contribute to greater social outcomes locally and broadly such as cultural reconciliation, climate action and driving state and federal policy.

Biggest regret outside of work in the past 10 years?

Not having the foresight to have invested in shares in one of tech unicorns!

CALL FOR VIEWS – WASTE MANAGEMENT

Australia is set to ban exports of waste plastic, paper, glass and tyres in the near future, and LG Professionals Australia is submitting local government feedback on Australia’s approach to implementing these export bans, to help inform how the bans are introduced, and the support needed to implement them.

This is an ambitious goal and local governments will have a key role, but resources will be required.

Your feedback is vital here.

Please reach out on admin@lgprofessionalsaustralia.org.au or recommend a colleague and we will contact them.

Any views you have here on the key issues for what support our sector and its professionals need or otherwise council voices you’d like represented will be very welcome. Thank you
