COVID-19 RESOURCES

A list of COVID-19 resource links are found on the LG Professionals website here. You are welcome to email any resources for inclusion on our website.

JLT Public Sector have provided the following documents that have been specifically written for local government.

NATIONAL UPDATE

Australasian Management Challenge

This year the Australasian Management Challenge will be delivered in a virtual environment. The learning and development outcomes of this program are more relevant than ever during the pandemic, with additional resources geared toward team building, managing workloads, and delivering results under pressure while working remotely.

National Office has received a fantastic response from participating teams eager to engage in this digitally evolved way of working to see what new practical insights from the experience they can apply to their home councils.

Tasmania's regional state round is scheduled on Wednesday 22 July.

COVID-Cast

National has begun releasing one-on-one interviews with local government leaders as they grapple with the challenges of managing the COVID-19 pandemic. This resource for local governments facing these same challenges comes in the form of a weekly limited podcast series, the Local Government COVID-Cast. The interviews cover how the pandemic is affecting council business or how councils are effectively ensuring community safety among other challenges unique to various councils across the country. Burnie General Manager Andrew Wardlaw features in one of the interviews discussing the impacts on Council of the outbreak at the North West Regional Hospital. Listen here.

COVID-19 Advocacy

LG Professionals Australia has been working to develop a funding proposal to see additional Federal funding support for councils. The premise of the proposal is to ensure local government is included in any further stimulus program and to suggest the Federal Government work more closely with local government to identify the councils and areas of high priority need.

In addition, LG Professionals Australia has supported the sector request led by ALGA seeking additional Financial Assistance Grants payments. For successive years, half of FAGs payments have been brought forward and made in the previous financial year. With the change to Federal Budget timing, there have been questions around the ability of the Federal Government to maintain this.

MEMBER PROFILE - TIM JONES

This month we have interviewed Tim Jones, Finance Manager from the Kingborough Council.

Tim, what do you do in your role and how long have you been doing it?

I have been working as Manager Finance at Kingborough Council for five years. The role involves managing the operations of the Finance Department. This includes Council’s Rating, Payroll, General Ledger, Accounts Payable and Receivable functions. Additionally, I work on the Financial Reporting, Budgeting and Capital Expenditure reporting of Council.

What made you want to work in Local Government?

I started working in Local Government by accident. After a redundancy from the stevedoring industry, I knew someone at Sorell Council and they were looking for an immediate start short term casual to assist in the accounting area. I needed a change from painting the house! I enjoyed the role, and my workmates, so I stayed. A permanent position followed.

What made you join LG Professionals Tasmania?

I joined LG Pro for the opportunity to network with staff from other Councils. We all face the same challenges. Learning from others’ experiences is valuable, particularly with me being relatively new to Local Government.

What interests do you have outside of work?

Travel, Bushwalking and Photography. I love overseas and local travel. We visited Japan last year and, if not for COVID-19, I would have been at Villers Bretonneux for this years’ Anzac Day Dawn Service. I participate in, and lead, bushwalks for the Pandani Bushwalking Club. Some of my favourite trips have been South West Cape, the Pelion Circuit and walking the Overland Track with snowshoes in winter.

If you could give your 12-year-old self 1 piece of advice what would it be?

Enjoy life, work hard and don’t be afraid to try new challenges.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

In 1987/88 I joined an overland truck trip and travelled from London to Zimbabwe over 4.5 months. We crossed the Sahara Desert, travelled through Central Africa and down the plains of East Africa. I then hitch hiked around South Africa for six weeks. This, along with the remaining two years spent away, certainly changed me. I met my wife in London during this period overseas, she was from Hobart also!

What do you think are some of the biggest challenges facing the sector at the moment?

Obviously, the aftermath of the COVID-19 crisis. The challenge of providing initial assistance to residential, and business, ratepayers will leave Councils with significant debt. The repaying of these debts will be an ongoing issue for those Councils without significant cash reserves.

Biggest regret outside of work in the past 10 years?

Not buying real estate investment properties!

REGIONAL RESTART HUB

The Cradle Coast Authority (CCA) has launched a Regional Restart Hub on its website, to help businesses recover from the impact of COVID-19.

The Hub has three key features:

  • Request a mentor – small business owners can complete a simple online form to help CCA match them with a volunteer mentor. This free service was announced last week.
  • Funding Finder – users can easily search for grants and other financial assistance, viewing key eligibility information at a glance.
  • Tools, tips and checklists – practical tools that small business owners can work through by themselves or with their mentor, to help them get their business back on track.
