|
This month we have interviewed Shane Crawford, General Manager of Waratah-Wynyard Council.
|
|
|
Shane, what do
you do in your role and how long have you been doing it?
I have been
fortunate enough to hold the role of General Manager at the Waratah-Wynyard
Council for the past two and a half years. Essentially the General Manager has
overall responsibility for the operations of Council in compliance with the
Local Government Act and acts as the link between elected members and the
organisation.

What made you want to work in Local Government?
I worked in private enterprise before joining Local Government and planned on staying within Councils for no longer than twelve months. I quickly grew a strong affinity for the work Councils undertake and sixteen years later, I’m still going. The variety of work Councils undertake and the ability to positively impact a community are some of the attractors.
What made you join LG Professionals Tasmania?
My background is in Human Resources and I strongly value people getting the best out of themselves, whether professionally or personally. LG Pro provides opportunities for local government practitioners to grow and develop so I wanted to be a part of these activities.
What interests do you have outside of work?
Our family are sports mad so I spend most of my time either at work or sport. I am currently President of Cricket North West; do some cricket coaching with the North West u/13 junior hurricanes academy and Sheffield U/13s; am a member of the Hobart Hurricanes Fan Council and even have a weekly radio spot to talk about local cricket. We try and get to all Hobart Hurricanes home games. Our family are involved in Auskick, junior soccer, futsal and dancing. I passionately follow the Collingwood Football Club and look forward to them adding another trophy to the cabinet when the season resumes!
If you could give your 12-year-old self 1 piece of advice what would it be?
I have a twelve-year-old son and to be honest, I’m not sure he listens to any advice I provide. I simply encourage all the juniors I coach to work hard, aim high and never give up chasing their passions.
What do you think are some of the biggest challenges facing the sector at the moment?
Clearly, coronavirus impacts are going to be felt for many years to come and some Councils will face significant financial and development challenges as a result.
Biggest regret outside of work in the past 10 years?
I always look back and think I should have spent an Australian winter in England playing cricket as many of my friends have and loved every minute of it.

Beware of scams!
Tasplan has received reports from members and other super funds of scams as a result of COVID-19.
These scams involve people stealing personal information or super account details to get access to your super or by offering unnecessary services to help you access your super early for a fee. Members are being approached through cold calls, emails and text messages where people are asking for super and bank account information such as username, account numbers, password, account balances and date of birth. Read the article here.
April 2020 investment update with David Start, Tasplan CIO
Back in February, Tasplan's Chief Investment Officer, David Stuart, cautioned that we had little idea how significant the COVID-19 virus would become and how quickly it might spread around the globe.
Unfortunately since then, the virus has become a global pandemic and has infected almost every major developed market in the world, particularly the US, the UK, Italy and Spain. The question everyone wants answered now is: What next? Watch the video or read the article. COVID-19: Early access to your super
Is COVID-19 causing you financial stress? The government is allowing eligible individuals early access to some of their super. You can apply to the ATO to access up to $10,000 this financial year.
